What is Aging in Place and Why it Matters More Than Ever!

We hear the phrase “aging in place” all the time, but what does it actually mean?
For me, it’s more than a buzzword or a housing trend, it’s a movement toward empowered aging. It’s about helping people stay in the homes they love, surrounded by their memories, their community, and their independence. It’s about choice. And it’s about starting early, before a crisis forces decisions no one feels ready to make.

After losing both of my “healthy” parents far too soon, I realized how many things we could have done differently. Small things, like home safety upgrades, better organization, more regular check-ins that might have changed everything. That’s why I started Your Parent Porter: to help other families take proactive steps before they’re in the middle of an emergency.

At its core, aging in place means staying in your home safely, independently, and comfortably no matter your age or ability level. But that looks different for everyone. For some, it’s adding grab bars in the bathroom or better lighting in the hallway. For others, it’s installing smart home devices, decluttering tripping hazards, or setting up regular check-ins for peace of mind.

It’s not just about physical safety; it’s also about emotional security knowing that you can live your life on your own terms. And for many families, it’s also about connection, making sure adult children (often Gen Xers living out of state) feel confident that their parents are supported, safe, and thriving at home.

The truth is, most people want to stay home as they age. In fact, according to AARP, over 75% of adults 50+ say they want to remain in their current home for as long as possible. But here’s the challenge: very few homes are actually ready for aging in place.

Many Arizona homes, especially those built in the 1980s and 1990s, have sunken living rooms, slippery floors, high tubs, and poor lighting, all of which increase the risk of falls. And when a fall happens, it can change everything. A single fall can lead to hospitalization, loss of confidence, and even loss of independence. Studies show that after one serious fall, one in four older adults never fully recovers their previous level of mobility.

That’s why proactive aging matters. Taking action NOW, not after a fall, not after a scare, can make all the difference. And it’s often much easier (and less expensive) than people think.

With that said, here are a few benefits of being PROACTIVE! ! 👊

Being proactive about aging in place means:

  • Reducing fall and injury risks before they happen

  • Saving money by preventing costly emergency renovations later

  • Reducing stress for your family and adult children

  • Increasing comfort, confidence, and independence

  • Staying in control of where and how you live

When I walk through a home with a client, we’re not just looking for “problems.” We’re creating a plan for longevity, from the physical space to the daily routines that support wellness, movement, and joy.

Here in Arizona, our homes have their own unique challenges.
Foam roofs, tile underlayments, aging HVAC systems, and older bathroom layouts can create both safety concerns and maintenance surprises. Sun exposure, irrigation systems, and high-traffic flooring materials also play a role in whether a home is truly “aging ready.”

By catching these issues early, you can make thoughtful updates that protect your health, your comfort, and your investment.

If you or your parents are thinking about staying home long-term, start with a SAFE Home Check-in. It’s a personalized walk-through of your home focused on safety, accessibility, function, and environment, all through the lens of empowered aging.

Whether you’re 58 or 78, it’s never too early (or too late) to make your home work for you, not against you.

At Your Parent Porter, my mission is simple:
To help independent adults age with confidence, dignity, and peace of mind, while giving their families the reassurance that they’re cared for, connected, and safe.

Small changes today can make a big difference tomorrow. Let’s take those steps before they become urgent.
